Inclusive Paediatric Dispensing

Watch the recording of the lecture Inclusive Paediatric Dispensing. This session shows how paediatric facial anthropometry and child-centred communication underpin every part of dispensing for children, from achieving an anatomical fit to shaping a positive, confidence-building experience.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Recognise the essential clinical and practical factors when dispensing for children
  • View the appointment through the child’s eyes to reduce anxiety and improve cooperation
  • Integrate developmental-stage awareness into your communication, frame selection, and adjustments

Dr Alicia Thompson, PhD, Research Director, Association of British Dispensing Opticians (ABDO)

Dr Alicia Thompson is a leading expert in paediatric dispensing and optical education with over 35 years of experience in the profession. Beginning her career as an optical technician, she qualified as a dispensing optician in 1994 and managed a successful practice before joining Aston University as a clinic manager and lecturer. She completed the Level 7 qualification in Spectacle Lens Design in 2006, later serving as Director of Professional Examinations for ABDO, and now as Research Director. Her PhD from Aston University (2021) investigated paediatric facial anthropometry and its impact on spectacle frame design, research that now informs new children’s eyewear ranges being developed with manufacturers. Dr Thompson also contributes to the profession through leadership roles on the General Optical Council’s Education Committee, the ABDO Research and Clinical Committee (Chair), and British Standards for Spectacles. She is a frequent speaker at international optical education events.
